Coming into my freshman year, I knew that I wanted to join some sort of social organization. I did not have a particular one in mind, but the idea of being in a spirit group intrigued me. A friend had told me she was looking into Royals, and I decided to attend an info session to see if it would be a good fit for me. I enjoyed meeting and talking to an incredibly diverse group of girls so much that I applied to only Royals because I knew it was where I belonged.
Joining Texas Royals was the best decision I made during my first semester of college. After having a group in high school I was so comfortable with, I forgot how difficult it is to put yourself out there and make new friends. These girls in Royals truly made this enormous campus feel a lot more welcoming. Through activities like karaoke, barre classes, and movie nights, a lot of forever friendships were made. You are destined to find your new best friend in Royals; not only do we come from different backgrounds and are studying a variety of things, but there are so many personalities in Royals and it makes this organization a blast.
Another great part of Royals is who we are and who we represent. We are founded after Darrell K Royal: the most revered football coach to ever work at UT. We raise money for Alzheimer’s research and donate it to the DKR fund as well as visit the retirement home he stayed at before he passed away to care for other residents who suffer from memory impairment. I also love our tradition of putting roses at his statue in the stadium before every home game in honor of his memory.
I found a home on campus by joining this organization, and I am so thankful for all these girls. They truly make the rough times a lot easier and bring me so much laughter and love.
