When I look back to the start of freshman year, I can't believe how things have changed after just one year. I remember walking by all of the organizations that were tabling and feeling equal parts confused, excited, and overwhelmed. There were several groups that peaked my interest, but I knew that what I was really looking for was a group that I could feel comfortable in, gave me opportunities to make close friends, and helped me continue to grow as a person. Aside from hearing lots of great things about spirit groups, especially Royals, it was the info sessions that truly sold me; the fun, random conversations and how easy it felt to just be myself. Unlike some of the other spirit groups info sessions I had initially considered, I didn't feel this pressure like I was competing for anything--but more like I was just trying to get to know genuine people with similar values. Plus, the more I got to talk to Royals at recruitment events, the more obvious it was to me that the whole organization was based on empowering and uplifting other members.
After being a member of Royals for a full year, I have come to realize how much of an impact this organization has had in my life. Not only did it make my whole freshman year much more exciting, by keeping me busy with formal, recruitment committee, sisterhood events, and volunteering opportunities, it also gave me the chance to connect to so many amazing girls. Simply walking around campus and waving to other members or having another fellow royal in my class has definitely helped in making campus feel a lot more like home for me. I can’t stress enough how much being part of this community has eased my college transition through friendships and these kinds of activities, and I’m super excited to see it continue to in the future!
